2026 career roadmap

DevOps Engineer Career Roadmap

Build the systems knowledge and automation depth needed to ship software safely and operate it reliably.

Skills required for a DevOps Engineer

Use this as a capability checklist, not a keyword checklist. You should be able to explain where each skill is used, what can fail, and how you validated the outcome.

  • Linux administration and troubleshooting
  • Networking: DNS, TCP/IP, HTTP/TLS
  • Git and branching strategies
  • CI/CD design
  • Docker and image lifecycle
  • Kubernetes and Helm
  • Terraform and Infrastructure as Code
  • AWS/Azure/GCP fundamentals
  • Observability: logs, metrics and traces
  • SRE concepts, incidents, backup/DR and cost

Step-by-step learning path

Learn in this order so that advanced tools sit on top of durable fundamentals.

01

Systems foundation

Linux, processes, permissions, filesystems, systemd, DNS, TCP/IP, HTTP/TLS and shell/Python automation.

02

Version control & CI

Git workflows, build reproducibility, tests, caching, artifacts and pull-request controls.

03

Containers

Dockerfiles, image layers, registries, runtime configuration and container security basics.

04

Kubernetes & delivery

Deployments, Services, Ingress, probes, resources, Helm, autoscaling and rollback.

05

IaC & cloud

Terraform modules/state, identity, networking, compute, storage and environment promotion.

06

Reliability & platform

Observability, SLOs, incident response, self-service golden paths, governance and cost controls.

Best certifications for DevOps Engineer

Certifications can support recruiter filters and structured learning, but projects and production evidence matter more. Select one credential that matches the stack used in the jobs you target.

AWS Certified DevOps Engineer – Professional

Strong for experienced AWS-focused engineers; AWS provides an official exam-prep plan in Skill Builder.

Microsoft AZ-400 / DevOps Engineer Expert path

Current Azure DevOps exam content covers continuous security, integration, testing, delivery, deployment, monitoring and feedback.

Google Cloud Professional Cloud DevOps Engineer

Tests CI/CD, SRE practices, observability, troubleshooting, performance and cost on Google Cloud.

Free or official learning resources

Start with official/free material before buying a course. Use paid courses only when you need structure, labs or instructor support that the official material does not provide.

GitHub Skills – GitHub Actions

Free interactive courses for CI, reusable workflows, artifacts, Docker publishing and related workflows.

Microsoft Learn – DevOps

Use current free Microsoft Learn modules for Azure/GitHub/Azure DevOps skills.

Projects to build for your portfolio

Each project should include source code, an architecture diagram, setup instructions, tests or validation, and a short section explaining trade-offs and measurable results.

Production-style CI/CD pipeline

Build once, publish immutable artifacts, add tests/security gates, approvals and automated rollback.

Kubernetes application platform

Helm deployment with probes, autoscaling, ingress, disruption controls, observability and runbooks.

Terraform cloud foundation

Reusable modules, remote state, plan review, least-privilege identity and policy checks.

Reliability lab

Inject failures, validate alerts/runbooks and document MTTR and recovery improvements.

DevOps Engineer resume keywords

Use a keyword only when you can support it with experience or a project. The strongest bullet format is action + problem/system + technology + measurable outcome.

  • Linux
  • Git
  • CI/CD
  • Jenkins
  • GitHub Actions
  • Azure DevOps
  • Docker
  • Kubernetes
  • Helm
  • Terraform
  • Infrastructure as Code
  • AWS
  • Azure
  • Prometheus
  • Grafana
  • SRE
  • Automation
Example: Replace “Worked on Kubernetes” with a specific outcome such as “Reduced release rollback time by standardizing Helm deployments and automated health verification.”

Interview preparation

Practice concept questions, troubleshooting scenarios, architecture trade-offs and project stories at your actual experience level. Answer first, then compare with a reference answer.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Treating DevOps as a list of tools
  • Rebuilding different artifacts for each environment
  • Using Kubernetes without understanding networking/probes/resources
  • Automating infrastructure without state and drift controls
  • Creating noisy alerts without SLOs and runbooks

Salary and role expectations in India

India salary guides vary considerably. Current 2026 sources commonly show roughly ₹5–12 LPA at entry level, mid-level bands around the mid-teens to high-20s LPA, and senior/lead roles often ₹30–50+ LPA, with top product/GCC/staff roles going substantially higher. Scope and production ownership matter more than title alone.

Typical progression: Systems/Cloud/Build Engineer → DevOps Engineer → Senior DevOps / SRE / Platform Engineer → DevOps/Platform Lead → Platform Architect or Engineering Manager. Senior interviews focus on trade-offs, standardization, reliability and developer experience.

Salary note: CTC is influenced by city, service vs product company, GCC/startup tier, interview performance, stock/bonus, domain and current hiring conditions. Verify live job listings before making a compensation decision. Reference used for this page →
