Which should you choose?

Use CKS for Kubernetes security after CKA, and AWS Security Specialty for experienced AWS security work. CKA is a foundation option when cluster administration is your main gap, rather than a security credential in its own right.

Certified Kubernetes Security Specialist (CKS)

Worth doing when: Useful when you actively secure Kubernetes workloads and can practise hardening, access control and runtime investigation. Its practical tasks fit that narrow specialization.

Skip or delay when: Delay if you have not passed CKA or your environment does not use Kubernetes. Budget for the prerequisite as well as this exam.

Worth considering for experienced AWS security practitioners

AWS Certified Security – Specialty

Worth doing when: A good fit when your role involves AWS identity, encryption, logging and security design. It provides a focused cloud-security syllabus.

Skip or delay when: Not a substitute for secure coding or pipeline experience. Beginners should practise least privilege and incident investigation before paying.

Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA)

Worth doing when: Worth doing when cluster operations knowledge is blocking progress toward Kubernetes security. Understanding normal cluster behavior helps you identify unsafe behavior.

Skip or delay when: Skip if you already have strong Kubernetes operations evidence and do not need it as the CKS prerequisite. It does not cover the entire secure development lifecycle.

Add dependency and image checks to a sample pipeline, restrict deployment identity, document an exception process and show how a risky release is blocked without exposing secrets.
